THE SYNCRETIST
Originally coined by the Greeks, "syncretism" was a term used
to describe the joining together of rival forces on the Isle
of Crete in opposition to a common enemy.
We
think that 'syncretism' is one way forward in an attempt to
reconcile the polarised and opposing belief systems that exist
between political and religious groups. This online resource
is devoted to that process.
Syncretism is also associated with the process of communication
and knowledge transfer. It can originate with either the sender
or the recipient of the message. The sender may introduce syncretistic
elements in a conscious attempt for relevance or by the presentation
of a subjective and personally interpreted part of the message.
It may happen unconsciously as the result of an inadequate or
faulty grasp of the message or knowledge. The recipient will
interpret the message within the framework of his world view
or reality tunnel. This may distort the data but fit his values.
